Anxiety, stress and panic attacks
If you feel stressed and anxious, and this is making life hard, then you might need to get some help. This video (from the Royal College of Psychiatrists) explains what anxiety and panic attacks are and how to find help.
Anxiety is really common, and we get lots of young carers telling us it is big problem for them. It is more than just feeling worried and it can make you feel poorly. This could include feeling sick, shaky, finding it hard to breathe, having pains in your chest or tummy, or your heart racing (some people think they are having a heart attack). This be frightening and can make you feel very upset. It can also make it hard for you to concentrate or relax.
If you have a panic attack then these symptoms can come on very suddenly so that you can’t carry on with what you are doing. One of the worst things about panic attacks is that, when you're in the middle of one, it's really hard to think clearly enough to work out what to do about it!
So, if you're feeling under pressure because of everything there is to do at home, wait until a quiet moment and then have a little word with a parent, a brother or sister, or some other family member or family friend. Explain that you're happy to help out (if you are!) but that it's too much, and see if there are little things that might be changed to make the days a little easier.
If school is stressing you out again think of somebody there who you trust enough to tell a little bit about what's going on for you. Maybe a teacher, a school nurse, a head of year or somebody like that. A lot of young carers find it makes a huge difference if school knows about this stuff; it can really help to lower the pressure.
But being anxious and stressed isn’t just about being too busy. There's also what's going on in your head—how you're thinking, feeling and responding to it. It's important to try and do things to help tackle this. Check out our five stress busting suggestions from Mona who is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist.
1. Get active! If you’re feeling stressed then try and do some exercise, even if it's just a 10 minute run. It will help clear your mind.
2. Talk to someone about how you're feeling - Tell a friend, teacher, family member how you're feeling - talking things through can also help you find solutions to your problems.
3. Try to make time for some 'me time' even it this is really awkward. It’s good to spend time with friends or some time doing something relaxing, even just having a bubble bath can give you that chill out time.
4. Be positive - Write down three things at the end of each day that went well that day or your grateful for.
5. Avoid unhealthy habits like smoking and try to eat a healthy diet.
